She must be really nervous about something.

"I'm not sure why," he admits, "but it's pretty obvious when you are. Usually when you don't have to be."

Ah... Did it count as being a bad boyfriend if he called her out on that kind of thing?

When she doesn't have to be....

That has her stopping in her tracks. She grips the handle of her bag as she frowns at the ground. How couldn't she be? It was their first Valentine's together--hell, it was he first time she ever celebrated it. Chinatsu spent all weekend working on her gift, fretting over the quality and whether it was good enough.

"So what if I am...!" Hell, she'd been anxious all week.

[bartenderizing]

Ah, so she really was working herself up to this level of anxiety. In a way, that was one of her cute sides, as violent as it could turn out. The sudden admission had him stopping to look down at his partner and girlfriend.

"Whatever it is you're worried or anxious about, I guarantee that it'll be more than just fine."

And while he still feels awkward about doing so, but trying to show signs of being a better boyfriend, he'll lightly tilt her head up just enough to kiss her forehead.

Given that he was never the type to actually get confessions or chocolates before, Shizuo didn't usually remember when Valentines was. He only remembered White Day, and for reasons that no one should have to recall that time.

Before she could retort, Shizuo had her looking up at him, and Chinatsu felt the soft press of his lips against her forehead. It caught her so off guard that she couldn't even react, other than her cheeks heating up. Her gaze shifts as she tries to look at anywhere but him. So much for being the smooth one today.

"Tsk! Alright!" Bringing her bag forward, she quickly opens it and pulls out the small plastic bag tied with a small ribbon and shoves it at his chest. It takes a moment, but Chinatsu does look at him. "I've never done this before, so you better not complain!"

[bartenderizing]

"Ah," was his initial reaction, catching the mysterious item that was shoved into his chest. For a moment he's bewildered. "Why would I complain?"

But he's realizing that this was a gift she was giving, and he double checked- no, they definitely haven't known each other a year yet. Nowhere near that. In fact, that wasn't until summer started to hit, if he remembered right. Christmas and New Years had passed in a way that could be as good as expected for them, so- "Wait, what day is it...?"

[redmare]

[Chinatsu's jaw dropped in disbelief. Was he serious or messing with her? Then again, knowing her boyfriend, he would forget what today actually was. Hadn't he noticed all the other couples exchanging gifts? Or all the Valentine themed items in stores?]

Check your phone, idiot.

[She starts to walk past him, not wanting to have to say it out loud.]

Eh?

[ Except Chinatsu might've forgotten that he's got an older flip phone model that doesn't actually point out holidays. He's got the bare minimum and basics, having opted for something cheap that could also handle his strength. Which she hasn't seen in action enough to believe how often he really lost control, or got in trouble, but she knew that his phone was an old model and has seen some shit.

So it takes him a moment, and a search, to realize. Then figure out what the gift was for.

There are many times when Shizuo has wanted to do things, but feared messing up and being too rough, maybe even hurting her. So he turns and catches up to tug at the back of her uniform. ]

Sorry. I never really paid much attention to the holiday before... Thank you. I'll be sure to enjoy it.

[redmare]

[It's not til after he finishes talking that she looks back at him, her cheeks red and her lips pouting.]

...You better.

[She worked damn hard on those. It would have been easier and possibly safe to just buy him something, but Chinatsu wanted it to be more personal. It was their first Valentine's together, after all.]

[bartenderizing]

I will.

[ He assures her of that, and Shizuo's generally good at keeping his word. At least he always tries to do so- Trucks coming out of nowhere to run him over being a complete aside. ]

Did- Uh, did you want to do something after practice, then?

[ It's not like they could skip it, given an upcoming competition and another attempt into the Latin category, instead of just Standard. ]

[redmare]

....[Chinatsu nods in approval before facing forward again, but she does hold her hand out behind her for him.]

Sure, we can do that.

[bartenderizing]

[ He laces his fingers into the ones from the hand that's held back for him. While he doesn't squeeze, he does clasp them with a bit of force before stepping with a wide enough stride to walk alongside before keeping pace with her. ]

I'll really try to make it up on White Day. Really.

[ He says this, completely forgetting that it's the day of a competition. ]

[redmare]

[While normally she'd be all for that, she knew what day that fell on.]

You know we compete on that day, right?

[Oi, oi, don't go forgetting such an important thing.]

[bartenderizing]

[ That slows his pace enough that, even with his strides, he starts to slowly trail behind. ]

... It really is the same day, isn't it? Shit.

I'll figure something out.

[ He's going to have to now. ]

[redmare]

[Him slowing down does the same for her, considering how much stronger he is.]

It's fine, really. Kinda weird anyway to do a thank you thing a whole month after. [She really didn't get that bit. It seemed to make more sense how they did it abroad, where both celebrated on the same day.]

[ Something he tends to forget about, just for how easy things seem to have gotten since they first partnered up. At this point he wasn't sure if she slowed down to avoid getting tugged, or because his strength forced her to keep at a matched pace with him. ]

Is it? I guess... Actually, it'd be better to figure out a different way than that day anyway. White Day kind of went bad for me last year, so it'd be better to see it as just another competition day.

[ He doesn't really have anything ready to give a proper thank you, or do an exchange now, however. ]

[Now it's her turn to slow down.]

...What do you mean it went bad last year?

[bartenderizing]

It-

[ What's the best way of wording this without causing Chinatsu too much worry, past what there already was? Then again, she's seen some of the things that Izaya has managed to cause from behind the scenes. ]

There was something of a misunderstanding between me and a bunch of seniors last year. Some people got hurt, but we were all suspended for a little while because of it.

[redmare]

[Her frown got bigger.]

Did you get hurt?

[What kind of a misunderstanding on White Day would lead to injuries?]

[bartenderizing]

Not really... But you shouldn't be surprised by that.

[ He doesn't exactly get hurt easily. Then again, Chinatsu has witnessed that first hand since they've started dating. ]

[redmare]

Doesn't mean I have to be okay with it...

[She tugs at his arm, looking at him straight in the eyes.]


Hey, if anyone tries to pull anything with you now, you'll tell me, right?

[bartenderizing]

[ He looks down over to where she tugged his arm before drifting over to her eyes. Dammit, she was giving that serious and concerned look. ]

Yeah, of course... If it was something out of the usual, or if it seemed like it'd spill out towards you and dance.

[ That only seemed right. Otherwise it's so typical and normal that he'd just forget to tell her. ]

[redmare]

[Of course she was giving him that look. This guy had a tendency to downplay things that were a lot more serious.]

...Okay.

[Chinatsu will trust him on that, though she'll also keep a look out for any suspicious persons. She never really understood what people had against him. The guy was pretty much harmless by nature. The furrow in her brow doesn't disappear as they go back to walking.]

[bartenderizing]

[ That's because of a single person that made it seem like he was something else. Chinatsu would have learned that the people whom actually knew him personally didn't give the rumors much thought or credit.

Whether it was guilt or the distraction of trying to think of where to go after practice as a bit of an impromptu date, he was certainly making it harder for them to get through some of the new variations that their instructor wanted them to nail down for their next routines. Which is apparently more frustrating for her, as she says that it's useless to try anything if he's stuck in that state right now. ]

Ah... Sorry. Guess I'm just messing up all over today, huh?

[ Of course she was pissed. Anything that made their dancing suffer, she had no patience for. As much as she tried to hold it back, Shizuo no doubt noticed the exasperated sighs she'd let out in between. She let's out another as she wipes down her sweat with a towel. Sure enough, they ended training early. It was a waste of time this way. ]

What is it? Was it what we were talking about earlier?

[ She didn't think it'd be that much of a sensitive topic for him. If anything, she was more upset at whoever messed with him enough that it still bothered him now. ]

[bartenderizing]

I guess? Sort of.

[ He doesn't have much sweat to wipe down, though that's because there's very little that seemed to make him sweat. Nerves and when it was just him and Chinatsu, which meant that competitions were one of the two scenarios where she'd notice his hands being sweaty. ]

I know I tend to be oblivious towards a lot of things, and I've never been good at others. While I didn't mean to, it looks like I've just been messing up everywhere today.
