Character Information

Name: Shizuo Heiwajima
Canon: Durarara!!
Canon Point: After the entirety of Durarara!! x2 (Or after the original light novel series.)
Age: 27
History: Wiki
Personality:
The first thing that one should understand is that Shizuo is a man who hates violence. His ultimate dream is to be the type of person that can actually have a peaceful life. Unfortunately, circumstances and his own physiology ruined that from a young age. With such a dream, but a body (including the brain,) that had no control and a hair trigger temper, he didn't seem to be able to make that desire a reality. So there was always a frustration from realizing this kind of failure. While this was his goal and unfortunate circumstance, that didn't simply make the man.

The thing that he's most known for, which can't be denied as a part of his personality, is a nearly uncontrollable temper. While there are some things that can keep it reigned in (and was certainly better at this point than even a year ago!) it wasn't hard to unleash the maelstrom that was often described as pure violence. The triggers are very specific, set by what Shizuo believes is right and wrong, including attacking someone and kidnapping women and children. Being so quick to spark, the reasons tend to be very direct and thus (with Shizuo's ability) quick to handle. While that's usually through violence, it surprisingly doesn't overflow to people that are uninvolved. Despite the multitude of easy triggers, he has a code and even further a way to partition and keep it from swaying what he thinks the wrong thing to do is. There's only one thing that's deserved a long-burning anger and actual hatred. Izaya Orihara. A person that Shizuo didn't like the 'feel' of from the very instant they met and it proved true from the fight they had only seconds later and as he proved to have all his fingers in too many pies. Izaya was someone that was shady, dodgy, and would lure people into convoluted schemes for whatever reasons he had- Shizuo didn't care and didn't really want to understand him. But people that spoke to someone and seemed to have some hidden agenda behind everything, it irritated him to no end. Of course, that's just one of his triggers. That and their history have honed the hatred to the point where one could say he had an instinct about when Izaya was around, or involved with something. (Then again, there were other times when he was just irritated enough to want to beat Izaya up because there wasn't anyone else to direct it at.)

Yet as much as he hated Izaya, someone that was demoted to being on the same level as a flea, that partition of what he was and wasn't angry with kept the hatred from spilling out to people that the guy was involved with. Shizuo was good friends with Celty, who worked many courier jobs for Izaya. Shinra was annoying, but because he was focused more on the unusual aspects of what Shizuo was able to do and spoke nonsense most of the time. It didn't really have anything to do with Izaya. Probably the best example of this is the casual relations he had with Izaya's younger twin sisters, Mairu and Kururi. They've known him for years, primarily being fans of Shizuo's idol brother, but he could handle them with ease. Even if their personalities would remind him of the flea occasionally, the girls were generally direct with their intentions and he's had little problem around them. Even the times he's lost his temper, it was to scold the young girls. Of course it helped that he had an absolute belief that children were innocent, and no harm should come to them. Which was why he wouldn't even show Akane a scary face when she mentioned what Izaya told her (that Shizuo was an assassin to kill her Yakuza father. To which she went to kill Shizuo first.)

In fact, while it was part of his unshakeable belief about children, the days he met Akane was a real testament to how much he had grown as a person. To keep from scaring a child, he held murderous rage and a normally uncontrollable temper underneath a dorky smile and an act his friend said would've rivaled his brother. Instead of being someone that immediately broke things and didn't care about who was scared or how the scene would look, there was a consideration put into his actions. A misunderstanding and unfortunate meeting (a frame job arranged by Izaya,) he actually showed restraint and tried to clear things up with words. This used to be unthinkable. Except even when that didn't work, and the gangsters didn't believe him, he didn't get annoyed to the point of beating them up. Instead he fled and decided to let things cool off while determining and setting this goal of having Izaya pay. He even managed to restrain himself again and only attack those that had kidnapped some women (teenage girls, even,) and calmly asked who was involved. Shizuo even had the consideration to not damage the bike of someone uninvolved. It could really be amounted to Shizuo having wanted to hold onto the values he had growing up, and wanting to be cool like actual heroes, but these things truly reflected the recent growth he had as a person. While some might say it was making him weaker, it showed that after all of these years, all of the times when his luck and Izaya's interference made him a bit of a kamikaze, he was able to round out as a person- even to those that wouldn't have thought it possible, having known him for so long. While he'd never do anything to endanger or bring trouble to his friends, family or employers before, this was a profoundly higher level of consideration than he had before.

But there's so much more to that side, which was the easy think to think of when it came to what kind of person Shizuo was. He's a good person with strong values or what was right and wrong. Someone that valued and took some things very seriously. One of those things was his family, and most particularly his brother Kasuka. Probably because Kasuka was never afraid of staying right beside him, and knowing that it was his outbursts that made Kasuka as solemn and self-controlled, he was easily the most important person and had the most say. Many things that he said to Shizuo were taken so seriously, even to a literal point, that they lasted to this day. He cherished everything that he received from others and had also given. It's the reason why he wore the bartender suits and glasses that his brother and Tom had given him, and why either getting damaged would lead to his rage being unleashed. He'd do anything for Kasuka, and do whatever was necessary to keep him safe. Whether it was to show up at shoots, take care of his brother's cat, or get help for some stranger at his brother's request. Perhaps it's part of a desire to be someone that his brother can be proud of, but it makes his opinion the most important one. This is true to the point that he could even go into a funk for even thinking that Kasuka was disappointed in him.

And while it's very easy to explain his actions to someone, with how base his obscure simplicity is, even those that know him would be surprised at how blunt Shizuo could be about himself. Generally it's true, but when looking at it very simply, most of the time he's been ready to demean himself and it reflects how little faith, appreciation and confidence he has in himself. This is something that, despite having many good acquaintances and people that are actually friends, he compares himself to being someone lonely and friendless like Izaya. He's frustrated with his failures at controlling his body and the violence it causes, and so aware of how much it has minimized his social ability that he's blind to a lot of his good parts. That he does have friends and acquaintances that he'd defend with everything he had if they were in trouble. That he's the one of those people with a kind of heroism that he'd do anything to keep a young girl safe no matter how fatal it could be to himself, with not even a debating thought, and have that girl first in mind. Someone that wants to use the cheesy lines heard in films and shows with good guys beating the obvious bad guys, even if their in a pinch. That no matter how angry he is, and lost in the violence his body causes, the voice of reason or a friend could be enough to bring him down to his otherwise easy-going self. It wasn't until a crowd of people possessed by demons insisted they loved him when getting into a fight with him, that the idea that anyone would feel like that towards him- Someone that was so monstrous and scared too many to want to be close to him- that he even started accepted himself enough to grow as much as he had. Then from there, he gained a coworker and found a young child that he wanted to help or prove to be a better person for. He was supposed to be something of a role model and made him a little more self-aware. For a city, and friends who were being put into trouble, he was willing to go 'all-out' to honestly try and kill the person behind it all, yet also focus it on that single person instead of anyone else that was around (and even minimized the property damage, compared to earlier fights against Izaya.) Yet when it came to his new co-worker interrupting to kill Izaya herself, it was her well-being that allowed him to stop and snap out of that focused state to keep her from being a murderer. Especially for his sake. Because he was the one meant to protect and take the hardships, you see. It was his responsibility and risk to take.

Without those memories however. Without the trauma and experiences that have made Shizuo believe that he was no better than a monster in many ways (at least for the majority of his life,) you get someone who has no reason to be distanced from people out of guilt and fear for what he could do. Mind he'll probably regain some of that through experiencing and relearning just how strong he is- It's not a skill that he'd have complete awareness and understanding of. He'll probably hurt someone by taking their hand too firmly, or accidentally break things and feel obscenely guilty. The skill and 'move' that he learned and would continue to have some awareness of is realizing when he should hold back and when it's time to swallow his anger and put on an act. Back on the lack of a monster complex however, it means that while he might not have the emotional experience and development to act on it, there's really something of a 'shonen protagonist' personality there. He was always the one that wanted to say things like 'leave it to me' or get to be someone that could be relied upon. So you still get most of what he was, but there's no trauma of losing control and severely injuring your first crush that starts the beginning of a monster complex.
Abilities:
Before detailing Shizuo's abilities, it's important to note that in a world filled with immortal beings, fairies, curses and demons, he is an entirely normal human being. Genetically speaking, that is (unless you follow theories about his family line having a blood connection to some immortal being that's in Baccano!.) There is one person that has theorized (since they were kids) that this is all connected to a 'brain thing,' very possibly being an abnormality with how the adrenal gland acts, but ultimately everything unusual about Shizuo is from a very bad temper and lots and lots of conditioning.

In a nutshell, he has superhuman strength and resilience and healing(ish), and can resist mind contro that takes hold through the sensation of pain.

You'll see in the wiki that as a young child, Shizuo suddenly started to have a hair trigger temper, where his body would just grab and throw things. Like his mind would black out as the body simply acted as it saw fit. This led to severe injuries, the body having to recover from that constantly, and always reaching for bigger things, or items that are more firmly in the ground. At the point that Shizuo is currently at, he can tear apart a truck, shouldercheck a construction crane (which was falling,) and have that change direction into another building, and has the strength in his limbs to jump and scale up skyscrapers. This isn't all fun, however. He can't really control this strength, as it comes through on finer motor functions; His friends would make points of getting him metal cups instead of glass, because it's easier to throw away a crushed cup instead of broken glass that's shattered everywhere.

Because of anime logic and his body having had to recover and adjust to the high demands and strains, he can get hit by a truck and end up stopping it (with little more than scrapes to the skin.) Surface-wise, he's no different than any other human. He's scratched up and bleeds just as easily as anyone else. However it takes the strength to bend steel pipes (or something along those lines) to affect his bones. In order to stab and go further than 5 millimeters, one would either need exceptional strength or equipment that is specially designed to do do serious damage. Like pens that were made to pierce through tanks. He can also be shocked by a taser that was modified to put down an elephant and not get more than a tickle. However, guns work perfectly fine, as they've got things like velocity and temperature pushing the bullets through. Then again, handgun calibers still face some resistance. He has been shot in the gun and leg, woken up after some time and walked to a blackmarket doctor (who needed specialised tools to extract the slugs, as normal tools would break and bend from trying to dig too deep into him.) Part of the reason why he can handle all of this, however, is that his nerves and brain don't respond to pain. Shizuo can feel sensations, such as temperature and touch, but if he wakes up in the street after being shot, the guy would assume that he slipped. Is it actual nerve damage or just an obscenely high pain tolerance? ~Who knows?~ Well, actually, given some of the breaks that he's had as a child (several along the spine,) it's probably actual damage. That just can't be proven or taken as absolute truth.
Strengths: Honorable, honest, direct, good instincts, resilient
Weaknesses: Simple, quick-tempered, forgetful, ignores protocol, lazy

God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Mostly because, above all else, he wouldn't do well as a god. Especially when he still has trouble believing people would want to be friends with him, the idea of followers would be so ridiculous to him... Plus, he's more likely to do things, like prayers, when a 'boss' is having him do it. He needs the push.
Cause Of Death: Short version? In trying to save a kid (who was trying to get their kitten,) Shizuo jumped in front of a bullet train. Death, injuries and damages occurred, but the kid and cat are fine! I extended the death scene in the shinki info page
Vessel: A pair of silver sunglasses with purple lenses.
Name Location: Back of hand
Power: Immovable Bodyguard - On the chance that an attack would land on the God (or anyone that is wearing the vessel in this time,) the impact would instead meet with a bright purple aura that is close-knit against the person- showing only at point of contact. This would be Shizuo taking the hit directly, as if he were standing there. Anything with less force than a speeding truck would have the same effect (and injury upon themselves) as if they had smacked into a very, very thick brick wall. The person that was going to be hit, as a result, isn't affected by the inertia of the blow. If there's more force than a speeding truck, inertia remains (though reduced,) and damage is reduced to the consequence of that force (as in, it's the hard movement that causes injury instead of the entire hit itself.)

This does not activate on psychic or miasma or aura-like attacks that go through other senses. Incorporeal creatures and attacks do not count towards this exception (so phasing or vibrating through to attack will also be stopped.) It does activate against weapons being used. In the case of firearms, it'll have a similar effect of a bulletproof vest (though surrounding the entire person.) Any attack that is taken in this state will also reflect as if Shizuo had taken the attack personally (as in, his body will reflect having taken the hits and may need to recover, depending on how much damage,) though this also goes up against his natural ability of handling and resisting injuries.

Ultimately, while this guard is active by default, the God can actively decide when it doesn't take the blow. You know, in case someone wants to be a huge jerk, play games, or would think it's funny.
